Support and Training for Veterans in Agriculture
For many veterans, leaving military service means figuring out what comes next. Agriculture can offer a meaningful new mission—one that draws on skills veterans already have, like leadership, problem-solving, perseverance, and a strong work ethic.
Shaun Gillilland, retired Navy veteran and current owner of Ben Wever Farm, is hoping to help make that transition easier by connecting veterans with training, resources, mentorship, and a community of fellow farmers. He is spearheading an effort to start a local non-profit to support veterans interested in a career in agriculture.
Gillilland plans to renovate an 1800s era farmhouse on his property to provide housing for participants, who will get hands-on experience through placement on area farms.
